As a military man living in a military town there are loads of Naval and Army monuments around me.
i enjoy taking shots of them and took this on a rare sunny day a short while back.

Memorials at Slapton Sands

There are memorials at Slapton Sands and Torcross in south Devon commemorating the fact that the area was used in the run up to D Day for live training by American troops due to the fact that it resembled some of the targeted invasion beaches.

This first memorial at Torcross is a DD Sherman tank which could propel itself in water with 2 propellers at the rear and would be launched from landing craft some distance from the shore. This one was recovered from about 1/2 mile offshore in 1984 and commemorates the lost of life amongst American troops during that training, particularly on the night of 27th/ 28th April 1944 during Operation Tiger.

The other memorial north of Torcross at Slapton Turn commemorates the fact that the local population evacuated the area to enable this training to take place.

(wow this looks comically cooked in jpeg. somethin' happened in the downscaling / converstion from 32 -> 8 bit. will have to reprocess it at some point. new sharpening techniques are working a bit too well! )

This is the Celtic Cross in the grounds of Carew Castle in Pembrokeshire.
The inscription at the bottom has been translated as being a monument to Meredith (various spellings occur) a king of the ancient district of Deheubarth, who was killed in battle in 1035.
The cross is carved with typical Celtic art, in the form of knots and plaits.
