I've been thinking of starting this thread for some time now. I love lighthouses and thought others may like to share their lighthouse photos. It's hard to say what draws me to them, whether it's their strength, solitude, quaintness, history or fascinating designs. I've started this thread with a few photos of the smaller, lesser known lights. I invite you to add your own lighthouse photos here.

The Drum Point light is a screw pile lighthouse that was rescued from slow destruction by vandals after decommissioning in 1962. It now stands at the Calvert Marine Museum in Maryland, where it was fully restored.

The Ocracoke Light on Ocracoke Island, North Carolina. Built in 1822, this light is still an active aid to navigation and is the second oldest operating light on the Outer Banks.

Very nice! Interesting to see how lighthouse designs vary in different countries.

Jumbotron: love the way the backlight illuminates the fresnel lens at the top of the lighthouse.

Rudi: That's a very pretty lighthouse. ...and love your sig!

The Bodie Island Light on the Outer Banks of North Carolina has been undergoing restoration for some time now. As of this summer, the work was 85% complete. The light wears a shroud over the lantern room while work progresses.

Hikari, which light is this? I've been to Maine many times, but being a creature of habit, always go to the same spots: Ogunquit, Bar Harbor, Portland. This looks familiar, but I can't quite tell from this angle.

This one's interesting. I'd love to see a view of it from a distance.

Two more of Bodie Island. These were from last year while the scaffolding was still up. I'm really glad to see this light being given much needed attention. My understanding is that it will be opened to the public once restoration is complete.

I did a little reading on the Ponce de Leon Inlet Light Station. The restoration sounds meticulous and quite an undertaking. I hope to get back to Florida someday and pay it a visit, particularly the Ayres Davies lens exhibit.

A close-up at sunset of the first order fresnel lens in the Currituck Beach Light. The pole-like features sticking up on the roof of the lighthouse are anemometers and wind vanes for measuring wind speed and direction.
Gf1 and Canon EF 400mm f5.6 L.

I believe a few were recently sold to private individuals.

Same in New Jersey. I'm kinda wondering what will become of them under private ownership.

I found another one taken with the E-PL1 I had just purchased prior to the trip. Some should recognize it... pretty quickly. (there's actually two lighthouses in the frame)

Is that the Portland Head Light? I have pictures of it on film from many years ago, nothing recent.

Ron, thanks for posting those Great Lakes lighthouses. I grew up between Lakes Erie and Ontario and never gave lighthouses a thought back then. Now I want to go back to do some exploring. I'll be they see some rocking storms.
