Damn clever, those Victorians,
but how do they make the light shine from the base?

I spent a couple of childhood holidays in Fleetwood
and would like to revisit one day.

Phare "La Vieille" (the Old One) as seen from Pointe du Raz, Brittany. In the distance lies the Ile de Sein with its own white-and-black lighthouse (Grand Phare de l'Ile de Sein").

An Abandoned Lighthouse losing the battle of time to Lake Michigan with a silhouette of one of the towers of the Mackinaw Bridge in the background 18 miles away.

4th Order Oil Lamp used for light in the above lens. This combination carried the light 13 miles.

This rotating beacon replaced the above. Not sure of the bulbs, possibly High Pressure Sodium? This carried the light 10 miles.

They recently upgraded again to LED, which carries only 7 miles. Each 'improved' light traded distance for dependability and ease of use. I suspect that with so many electronic navigation aids lighthouses are pretty much obsolete.
