BRISTOL, RI — The red-white-and-blue stripe down Hope Street has been freshly repainted. Patriotic bunting hangs from historic homes throughout town. And American flags fly proudly.

Bristol is all set for its Fourth of July parade, the centerpiece of what’s believed to be the oldest, continuous Independence Day celebration in the country, now in its 226th year.

    Unfortunately.... it rained...

    All images: GF1 / 20mm / Aperture 3 / NIK software- various

    Buntings abound.... everywhere

Just got back from our neighborhood parade, the oldest in the city. Although not old by your standards Alan. We did have beautiful weather for it though.

Cool to see how the folks on the other side of the border celebrate. On friday it was Canada day and we drank beer and played hockey with polar bears.

    Oooooooo, Fireworks!

Providence out on a wonderful show at India Point Park. RI Symphony Orchestra, and a beautiful fireworks display set to music. An absolutely perfect summer night.

I'm jealous ... all fireworks (including sparklers and the like) are banned in my city and the majority of the surrounding cities.

    Hi Sprinke,

After more than 50 years, RI has once again made the sale of fireworks legal to the public... As it should be. I always wondered about celebrating our independence under some restrictive rule....

Funny thing is, at least here, selling fireworks in the city is not illegal. But lighting them in the city is illegal. Out in the county is fine. The issue I guess is safety issues. Much of Alabama was in drought, so they put a ban on fireworks, other than the professional displays. Luckily up here they didn't have any such ban. Living in an apartment, we can't light them here.

Normally we go to one of the big celebrations, but usually they are a PITA to get out of, and being basically on a work night we decided not to go. Last year we didn't get home until almost midnight due to traffic from the show. We've also been having lots of heat and humidity, so we just decided to watch a movie at the house.

    Hi Djarum,

Yup, it's been hot hot hot in the southland.. and the wildfire issue is a serious one.

I'm a little surprised we haven't seen a few more fireworks pics, no?

I tried shooting fireworks yesterday night with my E-PL2 in Fireworks mode, and none of them came out nice.. all too bright, because the shutter seems to stay open for over 30 somewhat seconds.. :frown:

    Hi taz,

Yup, the fireworks, or night illumination mode isn't too hot. My wife shot the G1 in "night Illumination mode"... not so hot.

I usually shoot at around F 1.7 - 2.0 shutter speed at around 1/30th. In burst mode.

If you want to auto focus, you have to autofocus on a nice bright burst first, then just keep your focus in that position for the next series...

At 1/60th you can shoot during the peak of the explosion, it'll appear blown out on your LCD, but when it calms down, the exposure will look okay.

There are many many methods of shooting fireworks... any of them will do. The above is mine.

    Cheers, Alan

I've got some from last year I'll have to post when I get home.

IIRC, it takes a little longer shutter speed to get the "trail" of the fireworks. 30s seems awefully long, though.
