This flower picture was taken in the dark room using live composite and the flowers were illuminated with a flashlight (light painting).

Just received my Olympus OM-D E-M10 MK II and this was my first shot at live composite. Love it so far! @ 1/s, I believe around 30s. Not sure if I over did it...lol.

Tried live composite for the first time last night. I can see myself using this a lot!

Basically, I think I set the f-stop around f8, then set the shutter speed to Live Composite. I set the time to about 1-2 seconds and would watch as each image was made. I found that if I leave the Live Composite running too long, the colors would wash out. It’s trial and error for me.

I didn’t worry too much about the background. I always shoot RAW, so was able to bring the shadows up during post to get the buildings to show up.

Hope that helps.

I’ve still haven’t used live comp yet can you give a brief of how you did the fireworks with live comp I like the details in the buildings behind
To generalize a little, you want to set your aperture/ISO (and ND filter, if needed) for the transient part of your subject (fireworks, etc), much as you would for a flash, and then adjust the base time (the exposure time of each successive composited capture) for the static part of your scene, again much as you would when balancing the distant background in a flash portrait. This second part has the limitation, at least on my camera, of a minimum 1/2 second exposure, so you have to keep that in mind when evaluating the overall scene (for daytime use, you'll probably need an ND filter).

Here's an example where I had the 45/1.8 wide open (it's a portrait, after all!) which required a dark room so that there would still be little ambient light even at 1/2s (ISO 200). Unlike with fireworks, in this case I could somewhat control the exposure of the laser track by how quickly I "scribbled" with it.

In any case, expect to spend some time fiddling with the parameters. :D

Well, we had some lightning last night (why always when I want to go to bed, though?!) and I just couldn't pass up the opportunity :) Olympus EM1+Pro12-40, Live Composite.

15s per exposure for about 2-3 minutes. Color balance adjusted in LR. I just love "collecting" lightning strikes.

10s per exposure for about 1.5 minutes. I had no idea the lightning cell was that huge – it was pitch black, and too bright to see anything during the lightning. Just gotta love technology :)

I’m asking because I’m looking at learning, I’m proof that you can teach an old dog some new tricks
Love your images
Thank you

Hey Jeff,

In Live Composite mode, every image is taken with the same exposure. As I wrote above, each exposure was either 10s or 15s. The total duration I can't tell, because that's not included in the EXIF data I can see. I basically just stare at the display on my Olympus until I like what I see or I notice that subsequent lightning bolts don't get added – that means the image is already so bright that additional brightness isn't sufficient to be added.

F-stop was down to 2.8 and ISO was 200.
