A small brush fire about a quarter mile away last July. The fire department was quickly on it. They said fireworks started it.

I posted these in another thread, but this fire was across from my house.

This one at the end of June of 2015 threatened to become a big one, but finally got stopped at 110 acres or so. "2015 Glacier Rim Fire: Good thing it's only 92 so far today, instead of 102 like the past couple of days. It's dangerous in here because a lot of tall dead rotting trunks have been standing ever since the huge Robert Fire of 2003. Snags fall all the time now. This guy has balls."

Back to the Glacier Rim Fire that had everybody in NW Montana worried back in 2015: I was having trouble tracking the copter through all the brush and getting focus from my distant vantage point, but here it's dragging the water bucket for a fill in the north fork of the Flathead River a mile or so from the fire. My consolation is that the pictures in the local papers were even worse ; }

Put a few more up in my Flickr Glacier Rim Fire 2015 album. Here's a few of those. For backstory, plenty is there at Flickr...

Considering the magnitude of fires, those buckets seem TINY!

As I recall this one got stopped at 120 acres or less about 10 or 20 days after I took photos, and they had up to 6 copters at a time making rounds during that period. The buckets fit the river access and the copter sizes. I think this smoldered right up until early snows without gaining any acreage thanks to dozer-cleared perimeter wherever the terrain allowed.

Some old film images Sept'03 OM4t + 18/3/5, 35~105.

FWIW fires around here all you can see is the smoke ... unless you are waaay too close.
