I believe this was one of the last "going away special edition" of the new Beetle.

Evidence of better brakes than cars behind, I would guess.

Or someone that can’t drive a car in reverse.
Potentially. But, it seems that the damage seems to be on both sides of the rear and top of the trunk - usually when people have reverse issues - they run into the side of something and just one size of the rear will be damaged.

It is either multiple events like that, someone who just went in reverse directly into a car sized object parked behind them - or a case of someone running into the back of that car. Statistically, I would suspect that is the most likely scenario - but it is just speculation...

FWIW - I had a 1991 BMW 318i which I loved (probably best era for BMW as a brand) - and would have kept as a forever car (like my old Miata). Was standing at a red light when a van just rammed into it and pretzelled it. Luckily it was pretty well built for a car of that era - no-one was hurt, but my kids had to get out of the car from the front seats since he ran into it so fast that the rear doors no longer opened..

Nice shots, Tim (@Brownie).

As I understand it, the only part of the GT40 made or designed by Ford was the bonnet emblem ...
Well, the earlier versions were built in the UK and based on the Lola. The Mk IV was built in the US. All had Ford engines. And in fact, it wasn't a successful car until it was moved to the US.
