The Fleece is still there, but I don't think I've ever been in there. Even as a teenager I shied away from the city life. My 'local' pubs were anything but local. I'd often ride / drive maybe 30-40 miles out into the countryside to quaint old village inns. Being in a like minded social group, we'd take it in turns to be the dedicated driver.

We're going slightly off topic here, but I remember going to a gig in the Fleece & Firkin one evening when I was on a work's course in Brizzle.
I saw the Buttermountain Boys and the Gutter Brothers.
Cajun / Rockabilly in the West Country; who'd have guessed it. :dance3:

The area has seen a lot of redevelopment in recent years. It's now more focused on recreation (bars and restaurants) than a working dock.

And yes, the redevelopment is outstanding. It's changing all the time and the area behind the M-Shed has been converted into a trendy new "hip" place to go. The area has been given the name "Cargo" and is mostly constructed from shipping containers, which have been upcycled into quaint little shops and cafes. The old warehouses alongside are being converted into posh apartments too, with some having terrific views over the floating harbour.

Wow that is totally different from what I remember but then I left the UK in 2003 so I would imagine a lot has changed.

Going slightly off topic again

.....
last year they were converting the old building behind that chimney in the second photo.
We thought it a lovely spot, as it's directly opposite the S.S. Great Britain.
We revisited in February and walked past them.
I think there was one apartment left, but obviously well out of our league.
'Tis a glorious place now though.

Yes, I bet it's expensive there. There's been a bit of news coverage about anti-social behaviour in the area lately, mostly drinking and litter dropping. It wasn't me!

The lobster boat Nellie Row is unique in this area (Lunenburg, Nova Scotia). She has an all-female captain and crew. The boat is named after captain Gail Atkinson's grandmother.

The Fundy Major is typical of modern lobster fishing boats in Nova Scotia. The original 'Cape Islander' design has been credited to boat builders from Cape Sable Island, in the early 1900's. Over the years, the basic design has been tweaked, most notably with a much wider beam (to carry more lobster traps).
