So there's a huge storm right now across the Eastern half of the US, and I thought I'd document it for you in real time. Got the urge to play around and snap from some of the windows around the house.

I'm sure there's more of you out there that are getting hit by it! Do share!

We've been getting pounded with snow this winter, but this particular storm, which is killing the midwest, is just giving us a good dose of ice and freezing rain. Making the huge icicles we've had for weeks that much bigger.

Ouch, I'll take a foot of snow over all that ice any day. The Midwest magic 8 ball was shaken in Minnesota, and we got bitter cold for a week. I guess not too bad!

@Ray: Great shots! I especially like the second one. The first one is cool too - it almost looks like an image on an old school CRT due to the screen.
@Penfan: I love the second one as well. Nice curve to the twig intersecting those huge icicles. Nice!

Here are some more from the post-storm digging out project. Over 20 inches fell, with some snow drifts being 7 feet deep or more. All shots are with my EPL-1 and 20mm Panny:

Thanks

Thanks, Sonus. Nice photos as well---you guys got a lot of snow for sure (looks like what happened to us the day after Christmas). I always find it ironic to see firemen shoveling away snow and ice!

My wife, shoveling through the 2-3 foot drifts in our driveway. Don't worry, I helped. :)
:-D

Here's mine doing the same. :p

I was surprised to hear that two feet was a record of some sort in Chicago and the rest of the upper midwest? I thought you guys got nailed with snow all the time? Two feet is a lot, but we had three storms of 18 inches or more last year (that was a BIG year for sure) but we've had several dumps that big in the 20 years or so we've live in the Philly area. And I thought you guys got a lot more snow that we did? Maybe it snows more often but the big dumps are rare?

In any case, good luck digging out!

Here's some Chicago historical snowfall data quoted from National Weather Service

Snowfall of 10 Inches or More - Storm Total
January 21-23, 2005 11.2 inches
January 30-31, 2002 12.0 inches
February 18, 2000 11.1 inches
January 1-3, 1999 21.6 inches
February 10-11, 1981 11.2 inches
January 13-14, 1979 18.8 inches
February 6-7, 1978 10.3 inches
January 25-27, 1978 12.4 inches
January 9-10, 1977 10.9 inches
April 1-2, 1970 10.7 inches
March 25-26, 1970 14.3 inches
December 22-23, 1969 11.3 inches
January 26-27, 1967 23.0 inches
February 23-25, 1965 11.5 inches
December 22-23, 1961 11.7 inches
December 19-20, 1960 12.5 inches
This most recent storm netted about 20 inches across Chicago, so it's 3rd after the '67 and '99 storms.

Yes, Chicago has a reputation for nasty winter weather, but in reality we only get about 1 good winter storm a year, and they're only significant (over 10 inches) every couple years. We get frequent dustings of 1 to 4 inches, however. I'm not a meteorologist, but I can say that while our Summers are humid, our winters are very dry. We also don't experience any Lake Effect Snow, being on the West Coast of Lake Michigan. I go up to the UP of Michigan to ski, which in some areas gets well over 200 inches a year due to the moisture provided by both Lake Superior and Michigan.

From Wikipedia:
Winter in Chicago proves variable and fickle, but even in mild winters one will experience bouts of cold weather. The average Chicago winter produces 38.0 inches (94 cm) of snow. This is just an average; Chicago winters have produced between 9.8 and 89.7 inches (25 cm and 221 cm) of snow. Snow tends to fall in light accumulations of around 2 inches (5 cm), but about once every three years Chicago experiences a storm that can produce 10 or more inches (25 cm to 35 cm) of snow over a 1-3 day period. Unlike across Lake Michigan in western Michigan or in northern Indiana, Chicago rarely gets lake-effect snow because prevailing westerlies that cross the region pick up moisture from Lake Michigan after passing Chicago. Rare northeasterly winds during the winter may deposit the sort of snowfall that one associates with nearby snowbelt cities such as Grand Rapids, Michigan, Kalamazoo, Michigan, and South Bend, Indiana with the more usual westerly winds. Temperatures can vary wildly within the span of one week, but extended periods of temperatures below 32°F (0°C) are not uncommon in January and February. The temperature in January averages about 29°F (-2°C) in the afternoon, and 14°F (-10°C) at night. Temperatures can be expected to drop below 0°F (-18°C) on 15 days throughout the winter season. Although not common, temperatures in Chicago even in the middle of winter can surpass 50°F (10°C).

Here's some in Rockford, IL. We got nailed pretty good. This is what it looked like halfway through the shoveling... I've shoveled more this past week than I ever want to again. Tried getting close to the mailbox but I hadn't shoveled quite enough yet.
