Show: Beaches

  1. Major very low low pressure down in IL is creating gale force winds on Lake Superior today. Ice is still too thick around the shoreline for the swells to cause break up. Rivers have breached the ice at their mouths. Photo below is the beach (Bayview Township Beach) ~2km SE of the house. The Sioux River has broke free. Shifting sandbars create some interesting wave patterns & ugly surfing waves once the ice is gone. Blustery, gray day.

    Hi,
The thumbnail leads to something hardly any bigger.

    Hi Noelh,

Do you have a larger size of that photo on your flickr account, or someplace else?

It's just a little larger than thumbnail size here..

    Alan

  4. Sorry no. I'll need to check out the max size attachment I can post and re-post in the Members Gallery. My internet connection upload is very slow speed. Bit of pain for posting on the forum site.

Just downloaded to Members Gallery a larger image.

Alan, limited to downloading RAW with SilkyPix 3.0. I then transfer an image convert to jpeg to my desktop (Mac 0S 10.4.11). Import to iPhoto5. For posting here at mu43 I then export back to the desktop a reduced size image. Bit convoluted process. Need to figure out the ins and outs of SilkyPix. Be a few months until I can upgrade hardware, software.

    Hi Noel,

Do you have a flickr account?

Does your image application allow the export of images at different pixel sizes and resolutions?

Try exporting a JPEG with constraints (or not to exceed)

800 x 800 pixels @ 72 dpi. This should give you a more than decent sized image, and a nice small file to upload.

If you tell us what software you use, we could be of more help..

    Alan

PS. You can also .zip the file and then upload it...

  7. Same Beach different perspective.

Bayview Beach from beach level. This is one of two singing sands beach I'm aware of around this here. The sand "sings" as you walk on it. Combination of very clean water, sand type & structure. 2nd image of the pack ice was shot from a long ways away with the 45-200mm and significantly cropped. Bit fuzzy even with using a tripod. Both are jpeg. iPhoto5 with slight exposure correction.

noel - I like the symmetry of your image. My eye is drawn to the boundary of the two faces. The wave is like a ribbon separating land from ocean.
Alan - Great dramatic wave. Solitary gull casually braving the elements. Excellent.

Here's a little B&W set (done in PP) from a recent trip to Puerto Rico:

    Thanks Alan.

I just realized that the second photo was actually taken with a Canon 20D back in 2007.

    Oops.

  20. Cold, gray & windy.

Driving home from work the auto was rockin' from the gusts of wind off Lake Superior. Gale to storm force winds over the past couple days. Stopped by the local beach for a quick shot. Cold (+2*C), sand peppering the new 20mm lens & me. Couple quick clicks & back into the car. North end of Bayview Beach looking toward the Onion River outlet & VanTassal's Point.
