Oh man, I hope I don’t regret this, but then why is it so easy for me to get a razor thin DOF on full frame, while it’s harder to achieve on m4/3, and seemingly impossible on 2/3”?

@Mountain_Man_79 Chris, firstly, this isn't DPR (thank god!).

Secondly, the following is a reasonable and simple essay that explains everything, without a single mathematical symbol in sight!

I have managed to obtain very narrow DoF photos using a P&S with a tiny sensor that makes 1:2/3 look gigantic!

And it isn't even hard! Just follow a few simple guidelines, and you are home.

BTW, the first example that guy gives from his D800 ... The clouds aren't anywhere near in sharp focus, but it would have been very easy to do so, following his own 'rules'.

The photos below have got shallow DoF, even though short focal length, f/8 and mFTs .... I simply understand these very simple rules.

John, this is a screenshot from the article that you pointed me towards. It literally says that sensor size affects depth of field. So I feel like what I mentioned earlier holds true.

All things being equal, a smaller sensor has more DOF than a larger sensor. So I feel a little better that I’m not losing my mind, but I’m getting worried for you my friend!

So sure, it’s possible to achieve similar DOF on different sensor sizes, but not without some work - i.e. making changes in settings between them so that all things are no longer considered equal. But still, easier to get razor thin DOF on a full frame than a tiny 1:2/3 sensor.

Chris, I agree with both you and him.

However, understanding those simple rules allows shallow DoF with any format, and almost all lenses.

Now, when we get onto the subject of having sufficiently deep DoF, this can be very difficult to achieve with 35mm or 6x6 cameras. I (still) own at least one of all these formats, and an 8mm Minox too.

"DoF control" used to mean achieving deep enough DoF!

Nikon D40 with 18-55 and 55-200 kit lenses. Shot on a snowing day in NYC 2021-01-26. The camera and lenses were part of a Shopgoodwill bundle of cameras just to get a Minolta Maxxum 7. The Nikon was in nice shape and after a bit of cleaning is just dandy. Same with the lenses. I intend to sell them but I have to admit I really liked the image quality. The 55-200 is pretty decent lens much like Oly's plastic fantastic.
