Just decided how ime going to use this, my PC will not handle 6k so will extract images in camera.

This was done in pre-burst as its the one i want to use although not needed for this shot.

Very uninteresting image to start the thread but its dull and boring out side,lets see your results.

One problem that has arisen is the focusing in 6K is very slow, now i dont know if its the mode or very flat light today.

Just dont understand the slow focusing, its like someone pulling focus very slowly for artistic reasons

It's using the continuous autofocus it does in video, something Panasonic cameras don't do all that well. Also, unlike the GH5, there are no settings to control the algorithm (which doesn't really help anyway). (c;

I think it was too slow to be just that, have a feeling it could be overheating as well, maybe not to the point of changing itself to 4k but slowing it down.

My experience of 4k photo on the G7 is focus speeds are generally slower at close focus and generally vary by lens. The Panasonic-Leica 45 f/2.8 is the slowest of the Panasonic lenses I have, the 240 fps 12-60 and 100-300 II are quicker, and the 45-175 (which Panasonic markets as video optimized but not as 240 fps) seems generally to be quickest. I've found it mentioned a time or two the Panasonic-Leica 100-400 is also slow. Presumably the Panasonic-Leica 12-60 and 50-200 would be faster in 4k or 6k photo than earlier Panasonic-Leica lenses as they're 240 fps but I don't have either lens and haven't come across mention of the interactions.

I should probably measure the actual fps sometime but the Panasonic-Leica 45 is slow enough I've recorded hundreds (maybe thousands) of 4k photos to UHS-I U1 cards (which aren't 4k rated) without issue. The 45-175 requires U3 cards as expected. The 12-60 and 100-300 II probably require U3 as well but I've not used 4k with them enough to say for sure.

Heat hasn't appeared to be a factor.

The issue with 4k preburst mode is it is passively autofocusing as soon as you enter that mode. There is no "press to reaquire focus" as there is in the other video/4k modes.

So if something enters the scene on a different focal plane than the current focus point, you're at the mercy of the video refocus algorithm, which is slow by design to keep your continuously autofocused video from jumping all over the place.

Mike,

How many frames do you have to shoot to get one of those two keepers?

Those look good to a macro shooter (me). I cannot see EXIF data (if you are using macro lens and what shutter speed). But you got some of the hairs sharp already, from insects in flight!

I am guessing you were pushing the 6k mode to see where its limit is? I spray and pray for insects in flight myself. To get really high keeper rate for insects in flight, specialists use laser triggers, fast speedlites and heavy / expensive ($2500) specialized rigs.

Thanks, its the G9 and 100-400, a burst of frames is around 30, i did have the EM1MK11 and its pro-capture mode is far better and you use less frames.
