Trees in the Brachina Gorge had better be made of stern stuff: when the water occasionally flows through such courses in the Flinders Ranges, northern South Australia, it's a raging torrent, hurling rocks and huge debris on its race to the other end! You can see the scarring at the bases of these red gums, typical of trees growing in the creekbed.

I was intrigued by the base of this river red gum in a dry creek crossing in the northern Flinders Ranges; as I moved around it, I spied some uncanny faces!
