What are they? And where is this?

It's an ancient woodland in Derbyshire called 'Padley Gorge'. As far as I know it is all natural apart from the fences and gates that are there.

The scarred base of a river red gum tree. Such scars may have been caused by natural events (e.g. during flooding), or by the original Australians for making useful things, such as canoes or carrying vessels.
