A colony of safari ants, or siafu as they're called locally, was relocating today and their way took them through our yard. It is fascinating to watch them. The larger soldier ants begin by forming a living, biting, protective tunnel through which the others will traverse. After the way is secured, the workers come through the tunnel carrying the colony's food and eggs.

I've given up hope of getting any camera gear (specifically a flash and the Oly 60mm) this summer now, so I've been playing with the little FL70 flash that is part of the GM5 bundle to try and improve some types of macro shots. I made a diffuser out of a shampoo bottle top, and stuck a piece of acrylic inside for further diffusion and its sits on top of the wee flash quite happily. Seems to work fine for now.... this is a mosquito that came to supper. No Raynox, just the Panasonic 30mm lens.

Speaking of isolation (it's the word on everybod's lips), I found this little shield bug isolating in a bunch of carrot tops in the fridge. It sat for a while, giving me time to take a few photos, before warming up and making to fly away, so I gave it its freedom.

Found a drone fly (Eristalis pertinax, I think) today which proved a decent target for the little FL70 flash with the shampoo-top diffuser. Is it worth continuing for now with it? Could I be doing something different? The max shutter speed I can get with it is 1/250....I won't be getting access to camera gear for a couple of months yet, at least!! arrgh
