Swift Peacock Swallowtail #01 – Kemenuh Butterfly Park, Bali, Indonesia by Andrew Priest, on Flickr

One of the prettier, in my view, butterflies at the Kemenuh Butterfly Park, a Swift Peacock Swallowtail (Papilio peranthus).

We spent a fair bit of time exploring the Kemenuh Butterfly Park in Bali, Indonesia. I can highly recommend it if you are in Bali and in the Ubud area.

I don't know for sure what it is, but I suspect that it is a bee. And I think your previous post shows a katydid (they have very long antennae, grasshoppers have short ones as I understand it). All subject to correction.
This is indeed a hoverfly, an Eristalis species of some sort, probably tenax or pertinax. They are well known bee imitators and it's easy to be confused by them.

I'm on a mission. A quick google search reveals about two dozen different interpretations of what one of those species looks like, all quoting the subject with an air of intense 'scientific' knowledge and authority. They can't all be right.

That's the internet for you, Richard. A more definitive authority might be Peter Falk's Flickr page, but if you go there you will fall down a rabbit hole of immense proportions, one which will lead you down a thousand different tunnels until the small hours of each morning when your candle will quietly flicker out (pardon the pun). However, the rewards are great if you want to find out anything about British hoverflies. Eristalis tenax is available in many different forms and colours, which makes matters worse :)

By the way, should you ask Peter Falk for an ID of your beast, and he replies that it is a bee, please let me know by PM before you post the answer so as to give me time to close my account, grow a beard and retire gracefully to a rabbit hole of my own.
