I watched this blue grey gnatcatcher lead a young blue jay on a merry chase through the canopy. The jay was outclassed by this little daredevil:

Hi,

I saw a few of these birds in Europe but I can't figure out what they were... this one was in Rome.
I tried Cornell's Merlin, but it failed (apparently it mostly just has North American birds).

About the size of an American Crow or a Eurasian Magpie.

It closely resembles pictures I've found of the 'hooded crow' (Corvus cornix), but the eye seems to be further back, and the head seems differently shaped.

To me it just looks like a common crow. Here's another one, from Stockholm.

I got out this morning for a little while. The Cedar Waxwings I've been watching have at least one hatched egg as of today! I saw a couple feeding routines while watching, and they are sitting much higher on the nest, when they sit. I hope to see little beaks poking up soon, followed by sassy fledglings. Here's one of the proud parents, having a good look at the nest before settling in for a sit:

This guy was so close he filled the frame, after I backed up some:

I kept hearing this Green Heron, but he was fishing out of sight. He popped into my area for a quick stretch, before moving back to an area I can't see:

Working my way back from a long illness. Photography has been sporadic as I have good days and bad ones. I managed to catch a few of Hummingbirds in the rain this weekend.

Lovely photos, I hope your health continues to improve

I've been meaning to try my hand at BIF for a while, and finally was presented a good (?) opportunity the other day. A group of barn swallows (I think) has taken up residence in the neighborhood porches, including my own. If I catch them by surprise when I leave the house to take a walk or take out the garbage they tweet and dive-bomb me for as long as I remain. Well, the other day when we got back from lunch, it looked they were having a party. Must've been 8 or more swirling and diving and just veering out of each other's paths.

I don't think I've had a more frustrating time photographing anything, ever.

Shot with E-M1, 40-150 Pro and TC in Shutter priority at 1/1000 (which was not fast enough to freeze them). All with C-AF w/ Tracking and high frame rate. I probably should've had the whole screen of AF points activated but I had chosen the center 9 boxes. I also had focus lock on normal, and that probably should've been set to off.

Here are the only two really worth sharing - bit of a crop on the first, and the second is not cropped at all. Both at 90mm.

I think i shot nearly 350 frames and really only have those two to show for it. When I was lucky enough to get a bird in the frame, more often than not the camera focused on the sky. Other than the adjustments to the camera focus settings I mentioned above, does anyone have any suggestions for better results?

Caveat ... I am not an expert so make of this what you will. I use single af, centre 9 boxes, pre-focus, keep my finger on the button and shoot when the bird gets sharp in the viewfinder ... but it is 'hit and miss', well more 'miss' than 'hit'. Geoff

Thanks Geoff. Prefocusing would be a challenge because they were diving directly at my head, so the distance was changing all the time. The two I caught were as they zoomed by across my field of vision, but the more interesting shots I couldn't get. More practice required, I guess.

Judy, the above image is adorable. I should be so lucky to just see that in person, much less get an image snapped.

Caught this woodpecker awhile ago on a feeder in my driveway. E-M5 & P100-300
