I find it maddening to get a good shot of Red Wing Black Birds. They are so black it's hard to get any detail out of them even when conditions are bright, and in low light they force high ISO's and long shutter speeds. To top it all off they will then let out the most irritating squawk as if they realize they're driving you nuts.

I know the feeling, I love this small black birds because they have very interesting behavior and habits but very difficult to photograph. I use Spot Metering Highlight to make sure the camera ignores EVERYTHING but the light on the focus point. Works great in almost any light condition but you can see some extreme pushes in the EV, like ISO 6.400 (max. Auto ISO) or ISO 64 (min. Auto ISO ) and sometimes these 2 settings withing seconds of each other if the light changes extremely quickly (like very sunny with sometimes small clouds under foliage or forest conditions).

It seems that birds and the occasional hummingbird (here attracted by a bee balm flower) are the only flying creatures that come by these days.

Haven't been out in a while, so when I saw the clear weather this morning I figured I'd head out to my usual spot. Questionable decision, I think. Much nicer down here in late October
Between the swampy trail, fire ants and mosquitoes I managed to get these guys. I missed focus on the heron BIF but still liked it.

Amazing pictures, very good proof that reach of a lens has no substitute for however many pickles you have.
