Do they squash up like that because its cold? Ours usually have a little more distinguished 'neck'.
Yes, a bird’s body heat warms the air between its feathers, so birds fluff-up in the cold to trap as much air in their feathers as possible. They often also reduce heat loss by standing on one leg, with the other drawn up into the warm feathers.

Pretty ordinary - a poor little baby blackbird. I could hear my dog barking down the backyard and assumed the neighbours had a dog visiting, but it was this little blackbird. I assume if fell out of the nest. The mother was clucking anxiously nearby with a tasty worm for her offspring. Had to shut my dog inside, and hopefully the fledgling finds a safe place tonight. Unfortunately one of my neighbours has many cats, who tend to hang out at my place!

It was a cool moment to see and i´m glad there was alittle bit of light left so i could get some photos.
