Went back to Hamakua Marsh last weekend to test out the EM1X that came back from the shop. Actually, they gave me another EM1X instead of repairing the recently acquired reconditioned EM1X I sent in for repair. I wanted to make sure the Bird AF was working correctly and it wouldn't fire off bursts of shots by itself when I turned it on. This one behaved. The Bird AF is not foolproof, but it helped.

Hawaiian coot (alae kea) chase. This was across the marsh at least 60 yards away. I have hardly seen them fly, but they run across the water like this fairly often. The coot has webbed feet, the moorhen doesn't.

I was watching this black-crowned night heron (auku'u) and realized it was building a nest. It'd fly to the other side of the canal, find a twig, and then fly back across to build its nest in the naupaka bush on my side of the canal. I could predict when it would take off and catch it.

Here's the same auku'u from a different angle.

It looked like the Hawaiian stilt (ae'o) was chasing this auku'u.

Here's our Hawaiian moorhen (alae ula) for you. They're so tame that this one was walking just in front of me in the parking lot of the coffee shop. Notice? No webs on the feet.

Another good test of the Bird AF. This duck was flying on the far side of the marsh at least 75 yards away. The camera picked it out despite the busy background.
