I was going thru my photos when I found a couple of airshow photographs I had flagged but had not processed yet. Then I was surprised there was not a thread for airshow photographs. There is one for airplanes but not airshows, so figured I would start one.

Both of these shots are from the 2015 Wings Over Houston Airshow and are of the Breitling Jet Team. They are an amazing civilian jet team and one I hope comes back to Houston. Last year was their first time performing in the United States (they are from France if I remember correctly) and unfortunately they are not going to be here for the 2016 airshow.

This first one I was really happy with because it is my best capture of two planes passing from 3 different airshows. It is such a hard shot to get because you are panning with one of the aircraft and the other is moving in the opposite direction. I wish I had opened up a stop and kicked shutter speed to 1/8000, would have frozen the passing plane a bit better. Regardless, I am happy with the shot.

Post up your airshow shots and static shots before and after the show are welcomed also.

Thanks!!! Just think what you're missing by not getting the Panasonic Leica 100-400mm lens. LOL Seriously though, As good and the 100-400mm lens is, it would be a major issue shooting at sunrise, sunset, or in dimmer situations. Those situations might require 1600-3200 ISO.

.........................and that is exactly why I have no desire to get the lens. For anything but good light it will require pushing the ISO higher then I really care to. There are and I have much better options to cover the focal lengths from 100-400mm. Because I shoot µ4/3 and things are much smaller I can carry around two bodies and two lenses without needing a sherpa, so the need for one lens to cover that range is not needed.

You have some great shots there. I go to one every year and that's it, keep saying I'll go to more but never seem to make it.

Thanks, I keep trying for the Red Bull Air Race and always just miss it. I was in Indiana this weekend and forgot it was in Indianapolis (smacks forehead)

I spent the better part of the last two years developing a LR preset to use as a starting point for all my photographs, unless I am using one of the VSCO presets to achieve a specific look and even those I have heavily modified. This LR presets help me achieve a similar look across all my photographs, but I have since modified that preset for different genres of photography. I have one that I use for wildlife and then last winter I modified my original one to achieve a specific look in my cyclocross photography. With the airshow coming up (going tomorrow), I have spent the last month or two developing an airshow preset to use as a base. This will give all my airshow photographs (the flying photographs, static shots I am still working on a preset for) a similar look from year to year. So I went back and re-edited my favorites (still have more to go, that doesn't count the ones I tagged to edit but have never gotten around to) from the 3 airshows I have photographed. Any comments and critiques are greatly appreciated, still a work in progress and will hopefully speed up some processing after tomorrows shoot.

These 1st two are actually taken with my old Canon 7D and Sigma 150-500 in 2010 and the airshow featured the US Air Force Thunderbirds.

These next three are from the 2014 airshow which featured the US Navy Blue Angles and I was using my EM1 w/ ZD 50-200 SWD + EC-14. I had received both within the month prior (the lens was like a week prior) and was the first test of both. After the show I realized I could have shot the entire thing without the EC-14, every shot I liked and processed was under 200mm focal length.

    Breaking Away
    by RRcoleJR Photography, on Flickr

The last six are from the 2015 show that featured the US Air Force Thunderbirds (also featured the Breitling Jet Team and was their first year to perform in the USA, I highly recommend seeing them if you can because they put on a great show). This time I was using the EM1 w/ ZD 150mm, I knew from the previous year that I could easily use this lens for the entire show. I did bring both TC's and only used the EC-14 for some shots (there is one in this set with it), I found I really liked the prime lens over the zoom. I knew that the peak of the maneuvers happened in a range that was perfect for the 150/2, so I would start following the planes early and wait until just before the peak of the maneuver and start shooting. I had a lot more keepers this time around then the previous two attempts and I honestly believe it was because I was using a prime lens. I did have the 50-200 with me incase I needed it, but I never once felt the need to use it.

This year we have the Blue Angles, but no Breitling Jet team. I am going to try using the EC-20 on the 150/2 for some close-up shots, but I really prefer wider shots that give some context. I am also bringing the 50-200 because I want to play around with it and the EC-20 to see how well it performs. I am not much interested in most of the other parts of the airshow (I like the main event and Tora Tora Tora) so it will give me some chances to play around with that setup.
