Shot these on Saturday night with the OMD and 75-300 & 12-35 with an FL50R TTL set @ appx. -3. 6400 ISO, RAW, SAF focus, PP'd in Lightroom 4.2; tried CAF a few times but the 75-300 was slow, SAF worked reasonably well. Maybe next time I'll try zone focusing and skip auto focus altogether.

Really looking forward to getting the 35-100 for just this sorta event low-light.

The girls in blue are our local team, the Santa Cruz Boardwalk Bombers. It was their Halloween event, so lots of fun costumes and silliness all around.

The whole gallery is here on Flickr

Nice work and interesting subjects! Might dial down the noise reduction a bit though - a little noise gives the appearance of detail whereas removing it entirely can make images look slightly plastic.

Try to imagine a cross between a points race in track cycling and rugby, all performed on quad skates. A great sport to get close to the action, and there is always a lot of colour. Designed for photography? Yes! I hope to get some more pictures at the Victorian Roller Derby League grand final in three weeks. Go Rock Mobsters‼

Appreciate the feedback - did you conclude that after looking at any of the full res versions on Flickr? Reason for asking, the full res versions/crops still have a fair amount of visible ISO grain (I wanted to avoid going too far for reasons you mentioned) but the relatively low height sodium lights in the rink combined with my fill flash on sweaty skin and heavy leg tights brought up the specularity in a lot of my images. I was lamenting not having shot with a heavier duty diffuser like my Fong Lightsphere to soften the flash a bit more, but I wanted to get fill light across the rink when snapping away so I left the Stofen on there.

You're right that the noise is more visible in the full-sized images. It's still slightly overly smooth for my taste, but considering the ISO, lighting and lens speed, I think you did a great job.

One thing that I find makes a difference for me is to consider chroma and luminance noise separately - chroma is generally rather distracting so I'll use high NR settings for it whereas I find luminance noise often enhances the image.

    Great pictures.

We have the "Dixie Derby Girls" which are a flat track derby team in some sort of league here. Really fun to watch. An ex-coworker of mine was in it. They've had some members break wrists, legs and sprained ankles and knees. It's really rough.
