Register-plate problems on G1

As my G1 ages, I have noticed that it has started to develop an annoying quirk.

When adjusting the exposure compensation, by rotating the wheel at the top of the grip, the framed image will disappear and is replace by a page from the camera's menu ! A light press on the shutter button brings the framed image back, but within seconds a menu will re-appear. This problem manifests itself at fairly frequent intervals and I am starting to wonder if it could be related to wear and tare of a five-year old camera.

I have a suspicion that it has something to do with the register-plate on the camera's body. I am not a great "switcher of lenses" and usually carry one of the 14 ~ 45 kit or 20/f1.7 lenses with me in the field. I seldom take both. So wear, at this stage, should be minimal.

Has anyone had similar problems with their Panasonic G series cameras ?
