Taking photos of other people/other kids are borderline - but this one is extreme! They should give the dad a lifetime supply of ice cream.

Yes, lifetime supply of ice cream would be nice. But then they'd be contributing to encouragement of obesity. And they'd get sued for it.

Actually, by US law it is not borderline if said photos are taken in a public setting, (children in the US have not greater right to privacy than adults). Most US malls are private property, and, if posted, US malls can have and legally enforce a strict anti-photo policy. (Parents, who do not know the law and feel in a public arena their children's privacy is more important than the First Amendment, is where it gets ugly.)

I do know that the UK and Europe do not lawfully have the freedom of expression rights as enjoyed and practiced here in the US. In believe that in France, consent must be given and/or obtained prior to publishing a recognizable image of a person.

Based upon US law, this seems like an extreme example of public safety and security personal running amok ... but when in Rome ...

    Uh-oh

Is this gonna be one of those quasi-political "photographers rights" discussions we decided not to have?

At least the mall admitted they were wrong. I wouldn't see that happening in the US.

Even though there was possibility of situation getting ugly, it didnt. The mall apologized and changed their guidelines immediately. Anything else we can just assume how the conversation transpired, so its difficult to judge anyone's reaction.
