I have long felt that the idea of m4/3 was for size and love my EM10. I also felt that the 12-40 lens was just a bit too large. But last night i was going through a lot of our older photos and what struck me was that the shots taken over the years with various 4/3 bodies and either the 14-54 & 12-60 just seemed to jump out more. Just something about them. More so than the other 4/3 and m4/3 lenses that I have owned over the years.

So the question is do you feel that the IQ of the 12-40 is like these older lenses? Do you feel the results are even better because of the improvement in the camera bodies (sensor and processor) over the years? My last 4/3 body was the E30 BTW.

    Thanks, Steve

In a word, yes. It's definitely sharper than the 14-54/2.8-3.5 at the wide end, and probably on par with the 12-60/2.8-4.0, although the 12-60 is sharpest around 20mm, and the 12-40 is sharpest at 12mm. CA is also better controlled than on either lens.

It's certainly light-years ahead of what the E-30 or E-620 would get you, thanks to the lighter AA filter and more accurate focusing. But then again, the Olympus DSLRs with the possible exception of the E-5 never really did the lenses justice.

I had the 14-54 II and the Panasonic 12-35 (similar to 12-40 I assume) at the same time. I used both on my E-P5. I found the 14-54 to be very good but always felt I liked the newer panasonic 12-35 photos better. I did a few tests where I shot the same subjects because I was curious. I recently sold the 14-54 since it got very little use and I could not see keeping it and selling the 12-35 which I liked a little better (and with its obvious size advantages).

Bottom line for me, they were close in IQ but I felt the 12-35 was better.
