When we were in Puerto Rico we were fortunate to witness the protests that successfully resulted in the resignation of their governor. The protests we saw were peaceful and the graffiti was mostly (but not exclusively) done on plywood coverings. After the governor announced his resignation, volunteers helped to paint over the graffiti.

I didn’t actually attend the demonstration, but I heard it and saw the aftermath. I‘m in Toulouse, and last night there was a large march for women’s rights. They marched past the apartment where I am visiting friends, shouting and drumming. And, as I discovered this morning, writing or spray painting on building facades all along the march route. I’ll post more pictures when I get home in a few weeks.

Protests
Washington Heights, Uptown Manhattan, NYC

First 4 photos on 2020-06-06 was a racial solidarity march put on by locals of the neighborhood, primarily young Dominicans. They braved a heavy downpour before they made it to a view from my balcony.

The next 9 photos on 2020-06-07 was a march from Marble Hill in Bronx through Inwood, Washington Heights, Hamilton Heights to Riverbank State Park. This one was sponsored by a NY State Senator to show support for repealing state law 50-A which hid the behavioral and disciplinary records of police officers for the last 40 years. It precluded scrutiny of officers that had patterns of abusive or unacceptable behavior. It was repealed just a couple days afterwards and a bunch of other laws where modified along with it.

The last 4 photos on 2020-06-14 was a BLM march with a wide array of community groups with generally very different aims but common purpose around police brutality. This march went from Washington Heights down over to East Harlem.
