As I mentioned at Olympus 12-40 f/2.8 thread

I decided to start a new thread for pictures that makes me enjoy every day more and more about taking photos.

At spring 2016 friend of mine created with his friend few measuring devices that they wanted to get photographed. I said yes and we took about 10h session to make it happen. My friend and his friend was very happy about results but I didn't and now I'm trying to push better and better results always when I have extra time.

There was few months at spring when I didn't take photos about anything. Now I'm again very inspired and friend of mine told that when time is ripe there will be few very exotic projects to come. I'm waiting.

But here you are the photos why I created this thread and I'm gonna update it always when I have something new to show.

Please give me some constructive feedback when you see something that doesn't work. Photos should be in chronological order and I think all of these are cross posted around the forum.

    Thanks.

What are you using as backgrounds?

Backgrounds and bottoms vary almost every time somehow.

For example in watch pictures there was clear glass under the watch and aluminium foil as background.

In deo stick picture there was only my leather jacket under the product.

And at those last perfume pictures there was black acrylic sheet under the product and 47" 5-in1 reflector diffuser as background.

There is not only one way to do it, imagination is only brake.

Just a few things I thought browsing through the shots (never did product shots myself):

    - first jewel: more dof to see at least half of the item. Maybe a dark background? It looks much weaker then the other shots.
    - First watch: I prefer the partial reflection on the glass from the second one. I think there is a standard handles positioning used for watch shots.
    - Second watch: the brand name seems bottom-up.
    - Bailey's: I do not like the bottom up "ORIGINAL" text at the bottom I would crop that away. I do not like the decentering.
    - Measure tool: I would use more DoF for all the shots (the first one may be an exception). In the second one the blurry dial or later the blurry needle seem wrong for a precision tool. I would use thin DoF only for detail shots. Shots with the display off are a bad idea (yes, it can be distracting but with the display off it seems broken). I would add a detail shot of the "needle target" zone.
    - naim: a little dull, light could be better
    - truck: I would place it on tarmac, not on gravel, it looks parked, not ready to go. And a dirt road does not match the clean look and precise painting.
    - Corona: there are no droplets on the top neck of the bottle. Maybe keep the bottle top down for a while or use spray glycerin. I would remove the cap. And the two bubbles too.
    - In the razor shots the brush hairs look out of focus.

Just my 2 cents, there are many good shots there.

I really like these. Esp the corona (though after reading Klorenzo's comments, I'd agree on more water beads/colder bottle would improve it, but I like the overall feel a lot. Love the Razor, Liquor?, Boss 1 and Butterfly. Also agree first one needs more DOF and a tad more contrast. Baileys is ok, but rather see some back/side light.

The last boss perfume isn't as punchy as the first one....like the first one best. These are inspiring. I need to try something like this for kicks at home.

Thank you both for the great feedback.

I agree also that every photo aren't so special and there is too thin DOF at some point. It is very valuable information to me to get some different point of view for images so I can try to make things even better at next time.

I have, how I should say this, very high passion for learn lighting and composing for product shoot so I could have a change at some point to make some real marketing material for customers.

Let's see what kind of idea I have for the next one. Upcoming weekend I have really different kind of photoshoot but it is offtopic for this thread.

Well here is my next trial and error to make a good photo.

I'm quite pleased to the result.

Good job cleaning up the gear and setting up the reflection in a controlled manner. How did you prop the camera up?

    Thanks!

There was a match between the display and the body. It was the easiest way to keep the body up and clone away in Photoshop. It was even very stable solution and the camera didn't fall even once.
