There was a Primes vs. Zooms poll on thephotoblographer.com. Yawn, yes, I know. What I found interesting is not only the large number of respondents but the lopsided results and the presumed large participation by DSLR owners. http://www.thephoblographer.com/2015/05/26/question-do-you-prefer-prime-or-zoom-lenses/#.VWZF_GAbuud
The poll question is interesting, in that it says what do you "prefer" to use. While many more people may prefer primes, they may use zooms a bit more based on convenience. I know I only use a zoom if feel I have to. My preference is always a prime.
I agree with demiro and T N Args. When polling, word choice is critical and in this case, the question should have been worded "Which do you you use more often?" Preference and reality are completely different. I may prefer blondes but my girlfriend may be a brunette. I may prefer steaks but what I eat most often may be hamburgers. My guess is that it if it were worded differently, the results would have been more evenly split, if not skewed towards zooms. When I'm out and about shooting, the majority of photographers, regardless of level, are shooting zooms.
The wording is a valid point, I 'prefer' using primes but more often than not I use zooms because they are more versatile.
Forget the semantics; the numbers reflect they typical followers of that site. When a self selecting group takes a poll, the results will differ greatly from a randomly picked group. If you're a Williamsburg/Greenpoint, Brooklyn, hipster photographer, or wanabe, then you prefer primes.
Even 'more often' is questionable. More often for what? If I'm shooting people, I'm 100% primes. If I'm shooting landscape, I'm usually using a ultra-wide zoom.
"Preferred" could well mean which do you buy/own most. From Olympus and Panasonic's POV, many seldom used primes vs. one workhorse zoom is an argument toward primes.
