    P0017308 (2).

I took this photo at a yearly event where kayakers clean up trash on Batiquitos Lagoon, normally off-limits to watercraft of any kind. I don't like the image and I've never been satisfied with my attempts to improve it. Still, I think enough elements are there to make a decent picture. I'll bet someone can make it interesting. Let's see what you can do.

Entrants may submit one or two images. I will name a winner, first runner-up, and second runner-up after the Challenge ends on Sunday, January 31 at 1200 UTC (7 a.m. ET). Note that this challenge runs for two days rather than the usual three. The winner will provide the image for the next challenge within five days. Otherwise, the runner-up takes over.

    Sure, I'll play!

    1. tone processed in lightroom
    2. tilt shift effect created in photoshop.
    3. kodachrome 64 emulation from DxO Film Pack 5, cropped and further tone tweaked.

I pretty much threw the book at this. There's a lot going on in the original, that muddy shoreline is not super appealing, though I like the grasses. I tried cropping into some of the mountains at the top but that big dark hill on the right touching the top of the frame was too heavy. I hope you enjoy the mess.

Two crops after spotting and various lighting and colour adjustments in Lightroom aiming at adding a bit of drama while keeping a natural look:

What do people think about me posting my preliminary preferences at the halfway point at 1200 UTC tomorrow? Could be rather intriguing. Might lead to some reposting. It's not in the rules, but as far as I'm concerned, anyone can edit or delete any image as long as there are no more than two in the thread at a time. I'll make a final judgment using the images in the thread when the challenge ends.

My sister, an E-M5 shooter, is helping me judge the entries. So far we agree almost perfectly.

Your call; I'm happy with both of my naturalistic efforts but if you and sis favour heavier re-works ... :daz:

I think a good strategy would be to leave your highest-ranked image alone but edit or replace the other one. You really have nothing to lose--unless we change our preferences, which has already happened for me. Throws an interesting kink into things.

I think what I'll do is check for any comments about this prior to 1200 UTC tomorrow and go with the majority opinion on a halfway preliminary ranking. I won't do it if most people object.

Preliminary Ranking with 24 Hours to Go

The near-perfect agreement between my sister Belinda and myself disintegrated with Yang's entry, which captivated her. She prefers creative and interpretive images while I favor realistic renderings, though a well-done painterly effect can charm me.

    Belinda:
    1. popiT
    2. bigboysdad
    3. janelux

    Brian:
    1. janelux
    2. dlpruk, first image
    3. protapic

We'll resolve our differences and I'll post a single ranking when the challenge ends.
