Didn't quite nail the framing, still getting used to the Pany 100-400. But I did get a pretty sweet panning shot. 1/80th of a second with a kayaker = a very, very, very low keeper rate.

I forgot to say that another useful angle is from behind when the surfer changes direction and lowers the kite to power away....
Like this? :)

One of the longest running surf comps (45yrs) in Australia the Pa and Ma Bendall was finished today the winner was Mitch Parkinson. It is always a great run event with a wonderful family vibe.
It was difficult to get good photos as the surf spot is a long way from shore and there was strong backlighting. Attached are couple of the winner from the final of the Open Mens event.

This spot in Victoria can get stellar winds, but at the wrong time of day for the best light.

Mother Nature provided her own ND filter... the sun went behind a cloud, so I did a few panning shots of the kiters in the bay where it's smoother.

My fave pic o' the day

This kid, Reece Myerscough, is unbelievable to watch, he does stuff with the board that seem to defy the laws of physics. When the wind died off a little bit everyone else took to the beach to wait for it to pick back up, Reece stayed on the water and put on a clinic. (much to my delight)

I'd give my left nut for that much light. What lens are you using?
These photos were taken with the Olympus 300 mm F4.

I usually shoot at F4.5 which is where the lens is at its sharpest - but there is nothing wrong with the quality at F4.

In good light I use a fast shutter speed to freeze the action.

cheers

The sky was pretty transparent yesterday, no real clouds, but also not totally clear, it's almost the longest day of the year, and 3-4 hours before sunset I was struggling to stay at 1/640th, f/6.3 @ 400 ISO.

My top moment was just outside Cape Town in a medium swell, when a pod of over 100 dolphins decided to surf with with the humans, breaching the water around us for half an hour. It was amazing to have them right beside and around us, and it also meant sharks were less likely to be present. Sorry, no photos, this was 1995!
