Well, it's that time of year, Spring. What spring colors lack in intensity they more than make up for by being so welcome. When I shot this while on this morning's dog walk, the thought of sometime proposing this as a challenge came immediately to mind. I like the colors, I like the lines. The cloudy, lowering sky totally describes our April and May (so far). There are a lot of different ways this could go. Have fun.

JPEG (OV3 generated) and RAW files can be found here:

Competition closes at 11:59pm, Saturday, May 18, wherever you are. I expect to start judging over Sunday breakfast.

    The usual stuff:
    72-Hour Post-Processing Challenge Rules.

The Challenge Master provides an image or images to be "improved" upon by way of post-processing, as well as a closing date for entries.
Entrants are to post their entries, visible in this thread, at a resolution of 1000 to 1600 pixels in the longest dimension, prior to the closing date.
Each entrant is allowed two entries in the Challenge.
At the close of the Challenge, the Challenge Master will select a Winner and Runners-up.
The Winner of the challenge is honoured as the Master of the next Challenge.

    Notes:
Any/all source images used for the challenge must be the Challenge Master's own images. They are posted solely for the purpose of this Challenge; not to invite critique or criticism nor for other uses. If Entrants post their entries at a photo sharing site, they should credit the owner of the original image.

"Improve" is a subjective term, and may include many creative ideas, as well as traditional "fixing". The Challenge Master agrees that Entrants may make any changes they deem fit in their entries.

Entrants are strongly encouraged to share the tools and techniques used for their entries, however this is not a requirement for entry.

As we all know, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. The Challenge Master is encouraged (but not required) to state the criteria used to decide upon a Winner. While we may not all agree with the result, the Challenge Master's decision is final. Please refrain from posting adverse comment.

If the Winner is unable to post a new Challenge within five days, the honour passes to the next Runner-up.

nice composition! first cut took a lot of liberties I don't normally take. I really wanted to draw attention to the white blooms with a 1:1 crop with the bloom on the 3rds.

raw processing in Darktable: I cooled down the greens initially in color correction. applied graduated density filter to sky. used equalizer to add a little bit of structure. tweaked levels ever so slightly and then exported 32bit tif to gimp @ 2500px

gimp: applied a radial white-black luminance layer centered on the bloom to draw focus there. used a layer mask to dodge and burn here and there, then selected Fuji X-Trans from G'mics Film emulation tool, and applied the Provia profile to get those dreamy colors.

export: I exported back to tif on disk and resized with a new imagemagick mogrify script I've been experimenting with. converts to LAB linear color space before the resize, applies a little unsharp filter to clean up afterwards, then converts back to sRGB.

mogrify -verbose -format jpg -quality 97 -colorspace LAB +distort Resize 1100x -compress none +alpha -filter Lanczos -unsharp 0x0.75+0.75+0.008 -colorspace sRGB edited.tif

Thought the beautiful clearing might profit from some more space. So I played a little more with my first entry.

  13. 2:nd entry, B&W with SilverEfex. (I don't remember what preset I used, but I did use 2 control points to lighten the 2 white trees.)
