    72-Hour Post-Processing Challenge Rules

    1. The Challenge Master provides an image or images to be "improved" upon by way of post-processing, as well as a closing date for entries.
    2. Entrants are to post their entries, visible in this thread, at a resolution of 1000 to 1600 pixels in the longest dimension, prior to the closing date.
    3. Each entrant is allowed two entries in the Challenge.
    4. At the close of the Challenge, the Challenge Master will select a Winner and Runners-up.
    5. The Winner of the challenge is honored as the Master of the next Challenge.
    Notes:
    • The image used for the challenge must be the Challenge Master's own image. The image is posted solely for the purpose of this Challenge; it is not posted to invite critique or criticism nor for other uses. If Entrants post their entries at a photo sharing site, they should credit the owner of the original image.
    • "Improve" is a subjective term, and may include many creative ideas, as well as traditional "fixing". The Challenge Master agrees that Entrants may make any changes they deem fit in their entries.
    • Entrants are strongly encouraged to share the tools and techniques used for their entries, however this is not a requirement for entry.
    • As we all know, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. The Challenge Master is encouraged (but not required) to state the criteria used to decide upon a Winner. While we may not all agree with the result, the Challenge Master's decision is final. Please refrain from posting adverse comment.
    • If the Winner is unable to post a new Challenge within five days, the honor passes to the next Runner-up.

Entry 1. Vertical crop, tweaked contrast and color and finished with Nik Analog Effex. All from the jpeg because I can't open GX8 raw files! pp333_entry 1.JPG

Entry 2: Horizontal crop in 8x10 aspect ratio. B&W conversion in Nik Silver Effex.

Went a little "crazy", but it seemed to suit the image....to me at least.

The boy looked at the old, yellowed photo for a while and asked, "What did this do, Grandad?"
"I don't know, Billy. That's from before my time."
    PPC333-1.

All processing done in Adobe Camera Raw, including split-toning and addition of grain.
The (mis)print was confected in Photoshop.

Until this point, we have all concentrated on the antique handset but there's much to be said for the whole scene. After all, Danou75 made a point of associating the handset with the viewport and the light flooding in. Perhaps an association of the handset with the white light just before death? YMMV I decided to attack the clipping in the viewport by adding more light and fog.

    PPC333.

All manipulation done in Adobe Camera Raw (might just as well have been Lightroom).
    In Basic Panel:
Contrast, Highlights, Shadows up, Blacks down.
    Clarity and Vibrance up.
    Graduated filter on right:
    Exposure and Shadows up.
    Clarity, Dehaze and Saturation down.
    Graduated filter on left:
    Exposure down.
    Contrast way up.

The only thing that bugged me was the modern day plastic pipe and clip...
Then tried to give at a real aged photo look
Might come back and have another go yet

    Ok here we go:

    3rd equal:
rkaijus and kevinparis- Your entries with some tweaking are probably closest to how I would have processed the image myself.

    2nd:
bigboysdad- The crop, the emphasis on the phone handle and the on-point colour are very nice.

    1st:
SVQuant- Entry 2. Apart from the plastic clip and conduit and my own composition, the way you processed this almost makes me want to go and buy some paper and more ink, then print it out.

Hendrik, I honestly can't remember if the window was supposed to be in the photo or not. I don't know why I didn't include the whole chain in a portrait orientation (coming from an OMD EM-1 to a GX85 has made me a rear LCD shooter again. And maybe more lazy too). The only compositional consideration I remember was a plastic connector box to the left of frame.

    Thanks everybody for your entries.

SVQuant: You are next Challenge Master.
