So why can't I make a tiny little hole in the center of a body cap to make a pinhole "lens"?
You can and should
Easiest way is to drill a hole, and then place some tin foil over that hole then poke a very tiny hole in that tinfoil. Boom, pinhole lens. There is math you can learn if you want to make a hole at the exact right aperture for the focal length of your pinhole, but don't sweat that too much. Just experiment and have fun.
FWIW, I made my own "pinwide" by cutting a hole in a body cap with a dremel, and then attaching it to the concave bottom of a soda can to get my pinhole close to the sensor. It's not pretty, but it works great.

Just saw this video from Tony and Chelsea. Will have to get a second body cap and give it a go.
