I am getting a Pany 45-200 in a couple of days. Does anyone have any tips for this lens? I will be using it on a Pany G1.

One basic tip: be sure to update the firmware on the lens ASAP. It made a huge difference in performance (sharpness/OIS) at least in my experience with the 45-200 and 100-300.

There are no special considerations until you zoom out to around 150mm or more.
After that you need to try and get the fastest shutter speed you can to eliminate any shake and be especially careful about focusing particularly in low contrast subjects.

The only problems I've had with this lens (at the long end) are slightly missing the focus. I usually try to verify manually before I shoot. (I am set to S-AF+M on my Oly camera).

It's a fun lens so you should enjoy it.

I'm new to Panasonic (GF3). How do I update the firmware on my 45-200?

Go to the Panasonic website for firmware updates, download the appropriate firmware for your lens (and maybe body, if there is an update available for the GF3). To apply, follow the steps on the website. It's pretty basic though and comes down to:

    1) Copy firmware .bin file to an empty SD card, right in the root directory (not inside any other folder)
    2) Fully charge camera battery - must be fully charged
    3) Attach lens to the camera
    4) Insert SD card
    5) Turn on camera
    6) Click on button to go to review screen
    7) Firmware update should start automatically

Same procedure to update the camera firmware also, just using the appropriate firmware file for that instead. Each firmware update uses its own .bin file.

Check to make sure it isn't already updated before you go to any trouble!

    +1 on the firmware upgrade.

I've recently been using mine at 200mm for shooting flowers. By steadying the camera on something you can get some great shots.

This is one I took the other day.

Remember it's a 400 mm equivalent lens, and be sure to hold it SUPER steady!

There were firmware updates for the GF3 body as well as the 45-200 lens. Both loaded smoothly. Thanks again so much for pointing this out to me.

The lens came today. It is larger than I thought it would be. Fits well on the G1, but maybe a little heavy at the nose. I have updated the firmware, and looking forward to a trip to the zoo! Thanks for the I.T. heads up.

Even better, consider using a tripod and a good ball head. A remote shutter release is useful too, or you can use the 10second self timer. 400mm equivalent means you have to take a LOT of care, even with image stabilization (which should be turned off if you are shooting from a tripod).

I like that last one with the bee a lot, looks like you've been getting good use out of the 45-200!

EDIT..Never mind...found out Oly updater will do the trick
