If you add the the Lumix 35-100mm f2.8 to your cart, the price drops to $1399 at BH Photo. Don't think this make a huge difference in sales as its less than a 7% price drop - people buying a lens that is over a $1000 are probably less sensitive to a price change of a $100.

I wish they would drop the price in half - they would sell more than twice as many at $750.

Yep, if one is already going to buy then $100 is a good little discount. However, I agree that overall it makes little difference, and I'm glad I've had the lens for months though I had to pay ‘full price’.

why not it make it $200? Then it would make every other Panasonic lens in the same range obsolete

Err, yeah, but what if it currently costs them $900 to make? (Probably not the actual production cost, but with capital costs factored in that may well be the case...)

For Canadians, this lens can be had for 1299 CAD at thecamerastore.com, out of Calgary. It doesn't look like a sale price, and they have stock.

That is a better price - thanks. Based on all the reviews I have read, it seems to be worth it. Hopefully it will come down under $1000 later this year.

Cool! I'll bookmark and start checking some of the Canadian stores, as they seem to have some better deals.

I suggest you read up on the price elasticity of demand. Also, half of the current price is not an unrealistic price point in the next year or two. Have you paid attention to how the price of electronics tends to drop over time?

It is certainly possible that Sigma or Tamron can come out with a 35-100 f3.5 at the $750 price point.

Assuming m43 is still around in two years, youll be really lucky to get a used copy for $750. Camera lenses for the most part dont depreciate as much as other electronics . We can assume a lot of things about Sigma and Tamron, but so far its looks like theyre designing lenses for APS-C mirrorless and just porting them over to m43.

True, but I am not the one suggesting a $200 price point. I suggest you learn about the price elasticity of demand. I notice you didn't comment on that so let me give you a simple example, if they cut the price in half, and more than twice as many people would buy a 35-100mm zoom, they would make more money. That is why $750 is not an unrealistic number. I actually put some thought into my number. Also, that is just an example. You could look at dropping the price by 1/3 to $1000 and selling 1/3 more cameras, etc.

The lens under discussion is the Panasonic 35-100mm. FYI, it is made in China. Panasonic sells a 45-150mm lens for $199. Do you think it costs them 7.5 times as much to make the 35-100mm?

And if the curve is inelastic, as it very well may be given the limited market of m4/3rd's buyers, then Panasonic may have priced this lens accordingly.
