Just a humble Chaffinch - but I love this lens. (This is with the 1.4 t/c).

OLYMPICS 2020 - the 4 yearly telephoto shoot out !

If the 2020 games in Tokyo survive the Coronavirus troubles
- then this is the time when we get to see what camera and lens combinations work for the photographers whose salary really depends on getting the picture.

The amazing pictures shown here (congratulations to all who posted - I have been "liking" near all of them) suggest that there has been a real step-up in the ability of M43 camera and lens combinations over the last 4 years to reliably capture fast-moving sport and wildlife images. Lets see if Tokyo confirms this !

But what for those here who can't justify the current price? Sure - the Adapted Lens pages of the MU43 site are full of great static images taken with legacy 200mm lenses from the film era - but the action pictures here are a revelation. How much contribution is from the F2.8 aperture? How much the new AF systems? How much the improved 5-axis image stabilisation? How much the improved sensor performance at higher ISO?.....knowing that would help develop more cost effective alternatives!

Real Competition? The design needed to deliver the LEICA DG ELMARIT 200/F2.8 isn't too different to that for many other more affordable lenses - with only 2 ultra-specialised glass elements. Sacrificing the F2.8 aperture for F3.5 would cut the size of those large diameter front 4 elements in the design.

If such lenses as the 200mm F2.8 do get into widespread use to justify the Panasonic investment - then how long before other lens-makers offer us fast aperure autofocus alternatives at more affordable prices? And - how have others fared using "less professional" M43 lenses for similar subjects - is the impact of the lens as critical as that of new fast AF/5-axis M43 camer bodies?
