I have a GF-3 and I recently bought another (used w/ receipt) for a friend. I noticed on both the invoice and box on both units that only the serial for the body was listed.

How do they keep track of the kit lenses and know which is paired with which body. I'm asking in terms of warranty and coverage, how will they know if the lens taken in for service is the actual new on and not a different one from an older kit not covered by their warranty.

    By manufacture date

According to a dealer friend, while they don't document the lens serial number, the serial numbers do indicate the date of manufacturer. You body's serial number, and the lens are most likely manufactured in the same general time period. I suspect that they compare the body's date of manufacture against the lens. As long as they are within a few months of each other, it should be OK. Of course, physical damage would not be covered at any date.
