One of the reviewers at DPReview shot the G9 at a basketball game. His comment seems to suggest that focus lock is a challenge even with large subjects, so this worries me

No idea what he was doing then. Sounds like operator error. Heck, my GX8 has quite a bit less sophisticated AF system than my G9, yet manged these.

And again. This is just part of a series of shots, between the barriers where the AF could get distracted, yet it nailed every single one

If you read & believed all the reviews out there, you could convince yourself of anything you wanted, and not buy a thing. Heck, I could even manage these with my old EOSM, which apparently has the worst AF of every camera ever invented, past & present.
Also, I'm certainly no expert -I get to the track once or twice a year, if I'm lucky. It takes me 1/2 a day or so, just to get my eye in a little bit -which shows to me it's not ALL to do with the camera. Take that as you wish.

Some great pictures there Simon especially no 2 which to note is at 1/30th !
What speed was this one travelling at - full speed or on run down lap ? Superb panning in any case !
I’m hopefully going to F1 at Silverstone on Friday ( just for practice sessions)
I’m going to try to get some super slow shutter speed shots there
Regards
Rob

Cheers Rob. #2 was taken during a race, so they're flat out. It's also on the approach to Tower Bend, so probably the second quickest point on the circuit :)

Simon.

Robstar1963, that's some great action photography with the G9. Amazing skills with exposure and a steady hand. Some of the best I've ever seen. And with a Olympus pro lens on a Panasonic body to boot. Excellent work.

I’m on an 04.15 am ferry tomorrow morning to get to F1 at Silverstone UK !
Really looking forward to it !
Have been to F1 several times years ago including three day camping visits during the Senna vs Prost days (oh if only it was still like it was then !) and about 12 years ago for a practice day but have never been since getting back into photography when my little girl was born 9 years ago (which was the catalyst for buying into M43 with a GH1 for recording stills and video during her early years)
Only there for a Friday practice (2 x 1.5 hour F1 sessions)
Hoping to get some decent shots to show here :2thumbs:
Not coming back until 22.30 ferry tomorrow night so probably won’t be able to post until Saturday
Hoping to get something eye catching for the forthcoming season at my local photography club (they see quite a few motorcycle shots so something with cars in will make a nice change there too :flowers_2:

After a long day today starting at 03.00 I got something like 3000 frames at Free Practice 1 and 2 at Silverstone F1 today
Absolutely knackered so won’t be posting until tomorrow
One of the most enjoyable parts of the day was photographing some older F1 cars during some parade laps
Inspired by Ian @ijm5012 and Simon @srhphoto with their very low shutter speed shots I decided I had to dig deeper today and managed to get a few of the F1 oldies with lower shutter speeds
Will post some tomorrow
Was going to try to get out to do some shots of the Round the Island yacht race tomorrow but I think I may be struggling with that one !
Well see tomorrow :coco:

Re the G9 vs EM1/2 I am able to reduce the ISO on the EM1/2 to the extended LOW setting equivalent to ISO 64
This gives me the opportunity on the EM1/2 to lower my shutter speeds to get back ground blur on a bright sunny day which is extremely useful ( I realise I lose some dynamic range but this is perfectly acceptable on a bright day where I would otherwise lose some impact on my pictures)
I am not aware of something similar on the G9 so my use of it was more limited partly for that reason
The last time I backed the ISO settings down on the G9 to what I had foolishly thought was an extended LOW setting similar to the EM1/2 I found it was in fact intelligent ISO !
Does anyone using the G9 happen to know if there is a similar extended LOW setting on the G9 for use next time ?
I realise I should read the instructions but dont always manage to do everything I should
Thanks in advance
Regards
Rob

You have to go to C Wrench / Exp. / extended ISO and set it to ON

I'm glad I could have helped you to create more inspirational pictures. Trying to photograph sport as well, it is very nice to see the real limits of the system I'm using :)
