Decided to search around for a small, not too expensive tele lens to compliment my Oly 12-40 Pro lens just in case I need a bit more reach. I discovered this thread about a lens I never heard of. Users seem happy with it, but I was leery about the "power zoom", as it's new to me. Have to say I kind of like it. The power zoom switch takes you from wide to tele quick and the barrel zoom ring feels as close to a manual zoom as it gets. So, to keep it short, I'm pleased with the size (doesn't telescope out to zoom), weight (very light), and it's certainly sharp enough for my needs. You never know what you'll find on this forum and I'm glad to be a member.

The 45-175mm has become a favorite of mine, it's compact and I really like the rendition. I took this photo early in the morning at the side of the Madawaska River in Ontario, I took the time to use a Graduated ND filter and am happy with the result.

Oddly enough the 45-175mm is my favourite lens for macro and close up when combined with one of my close up or macro adapter lenses. The main reason for that is that it allows me to get a very sharp image with much detail.
The below pic was taken with the 45-175mm fitted with the Panasonic DMW-LC55 achromatic close up lens.

I use the 45-175 almost exclusively at magnifications above 0.9x. Mostly below 4x as, for example, here, here, here, and here. However, I've been hesitant to post to this thread as it's not an unaided use of the lens. But, as another example, these are pollen grains on Asteraceae ray florets at 9.4x.

9.4x produces a pixel size on the subject a bit under 400 nm, making sub-micron pollen structures are just visible at 100%. As photographers we tend to expect there's more always more detail to resolve if only a lens is capable of it but this isn't so much the case in microscopy (for a variety of reasons I'll skip over here).

My experience of the 45-175 is it's not ideal for vignetting below the 125 mm lower limit of close up lens focal lengths (Raynox DCR-125, barring a couple special cases) but works well enough. The 45-175's better behaved for vignetting than the 100-300 I have and I wouldn't expect the 12-100, 14-140, 14-150, 35-100 f/2.8, 40-150 PRO or R, 50-200, 75-300, 100-400, 150-400, 200, or 300 to be any better. That leaves possibly the 45-100, 45-150, and 45-200, all of which are trombone zooms requiring more care at close working distances. Plus the long end of the 45-100 and 45-150 seems a bit shorter than really desirable.
