Has anyone done any comparisons between these two in terms of sharpness and focus speed? I appreciate that they are quite different beasts in many ways, but I'm seriously considering getting the 12-35 and if I do the 17/1.8 would need to go - so want to make sure I'm not going to be missing too much.

I sold my 17/1.8 to get the 12-35 -- the only advantages of the prime are the obvious ones: smaller size and larger aperture. There's nothing "extra" that you'd miss, IMO.

Te focus scale on the 17mm is really handy for many types of shooting. I'm really wishing more of my lenses had them.

It's a nice idea, but the distance marks are so sparse and the ranges so narrow that I found it nearly useless in practise.

Damn, that's disappointing to hear. What about the ∞ mark? Does it accurately mark the infinity focus position? My O12mm is off just a bit.

The lenses are so small, there isn't enough room to make a really useful focus scale.

For me, it would be the 12-35. that's because i have the 20 1.7. the 12-35 is very good wide open.
