100-400 is going to be huge no matter who makes it.

Perfect range for birds and other wildlife. I had a 100-300 I used last year for birds and the wildlife with very good results.

Yep. Hopefully it won't have the dubious distinction of being the first M4/3 lens to weigh more than 1 kg.

A weather-sealed, optically high quality 100-400 f4.5-5.6 in the 750g and $1500 range would be an excellent addition to the system. Much worse in any of those categories would be a little disappointing.

Do you really think they could make it half the weight of the the brand new Canon 100-400 II (1550g)? That lens has a 77mm filter and 400/5.6 aperture is 72mm, meaning there isn't much room to shrink the elements even if it isn't a FF lens. Diffractive optics could make it smaller, but not lighter. Plastic vs metal body can only go so far.

    Okay, here's a wild one:

    It's really a 100-200mm f2.8 with a built-in, switchable 2x TC? :)

Well, the old Cosina 100-400mm 4.5-6.7 AF lens that covered FF weighed 740g.

Maybe 750g is aggressive. But less than 1 kg seems eminently doable to me.

After all, the Panasonic 100-300 weighs 520g while the Canon 70-300 IS USM weighs 630g, and the Nikon 70-300 IF-ED weighs 725g (VR is 745g). So shedding some weight definitely seems possible.

That Cosina had very poor optics, no stabilization, no sealing, etc. And it was only a 6.7. A 400mm f5.6 has 47% more glass area on the front element alone - plus it needs room for OIS.

I think the comparisons to the 100-300 vs 70-300s are more realistic. The m4/3 version was about 5/7 the weight. So compared to the 100-400 we are at about 1100g with the same improvement. There was a really crappy Tokina 80-400 that was 1020g, so I guess under 1000 is possible. But are we talking 700 or 990 when we say that? Big difference. 999g and 1100g are pretty much the same ballpark to me.

I guess we must wait (weight?) and see, no? Just one more day, and we can lay all our idle speculation to rest.

It might not even be an f5.6 lens in the first place, though that would probably disappoint the people most likely to buy it in the first place. The $1000+ lens audience seems to be much less weight sensitive than me.

My speculation is that if a 100-400 is announced it will make it even more difficult for me to sell my 100-300...

And silly me, I literally just bought a 100-300mm on Sunday. It hasn't even arrived yet.

But you should be able to do a return especially if you don't break the seal on the box.

Haha, I bought it used off a fellow forum member. For $348 shipped, I'm not going to complain. Not like I'm in the market for a $1500 telephoto (speculating...but I think it's reasonable).

second rumor posted. the lens is to be f4-6.3

Tomorrow (on July 16 at 5-6am London time) Panasonic will also announce two new lenses:
    1) Panasonic Leica 100-400mm f/4.0-6.3 Power OIS and weather sealed zoom lens.
    2) Panasonic prime lens.

Not sure tough if these lenses will be available for preorder or only mentioned for a future end 2015 early 2016 release.

Interesting that the super tele is a Pana Leica, and not the other prime.

It would really surprise me if that turned out to be true. No other zoom lenses for m4/3 have had Leica branding and a super-tele doesn't really fit in with the Leica image.

Ouch, I'm asking $298 shipped and including a holster bag. Maybe I need to price it higher to sell!
