Palais Garnier - The Building That Inspired Phantom of the Opera (Image Heavy)

Located in the Palais Garnier, the Opéra Garnier is an impressive Neo-Baroque building from the nineteenth century that together with the Bastille Opéra makes up the Paris Opera. This building was the setting for the famous novel by Gastón Leroux, ‘The Phantom of the Opera’. It was called the Salle des Capucines, because of its location on the Boulevard des Capucines in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, but soon became known as the Palais Garnier, in recognition of its opulence and its architect, Charles Garnier. It was the primary home of the Paris Opera and its associated Paris Opera Ballet until 1989. The Paris Opera now uses the Palais Garnier mainly for ballet.

The building features a large ceremonial staircase of white marble with a balustrade of red and green marble, which divides into two divergent flights of stairs that lead to the Grand Foyer. Its design was inspired by Victor Louis's grand staircase for the Theatre de Bordeaux.

Grand Foyer is 18 metres (59 ft) high, 154 metres (505 ft) long and 13 metres (43 ft) wide, was designed to act as a drawing room for Paris society.

The auditorium has a traditional Italian horseshoe shape and can seat 1,979. The stage is the largest in Europe and can accommodate as many as 450 artists.

The Palais Garnier also houses the Bibliotheque-Musee de l'Opera de Paris (Paris Opera Library-Museum) which is home to nearly 600,000 documents including 100,000 books, 1,680 periodicals, 10,000 programs, letters, 100,000 photographs, sketches of costumes and sets, posters and historical administrative records.

You are correct. While we took the guided tour with a live guide, many in the building were using the audio self-guided tour with a device.

Agree... All of the photos I got in the Opera House were of the same tint... very real photos here!

Unfortunately we toured this magnificent building on our own back in 2014... pre-Oly days... and all I had was a FF Nikon D700 and the widest lens at the time was my 24-85... after seeing your shots I want to go back with my new Oly gear

the first lens I got for my em5.2 in 2017 was the 7-14/2.8 that you were using in these beautiful photos. It is such a useful piece of glass in Europe isn't it?

You have certainly done the building and the equipment justice with the collection you show here. Love that you weren't afraid to shoot at 3200 ISO too!

Thanks for your feedback. It is much appreciated. With the EM1 II I have no problems pushing the ISO to 3200.
