    It's a photo. It took me a minute to understand exactly what I was looking at and why it looked that way. It's not post processed (beyond the usual, I mean). I still need to focus a bit to see it as a photo rather than a painting.

    Interesting background effect created by morning sun on a sand dune - impressive.

    He's standing in a shadow area which is relatively flat, and the background is a sloped sand dune in direct sun. Does that help?

    I think there's a dip between the shaded region and the sunlit region too, which contributes to the sharp transition and results in total failure of depth perception.

    Could be, I did a google search of "Camel Thorn Trees, Namibia" to find the image I had seen with the side view before, I couldn't remember, but the one I posted was pretty close to it.
