A year ago, I hopped across to Hong Kong to meet my sister (flying in from Kuwait) and to buy a shiny new OM-D E-M5 and 12-50 kit lens.

Then we all headed for Shanghai, where I began a steep (and still going) learning curve with M43 and the Oly.

Once home again, the images from Shanghai got inspected carefully before being consigned to the archive drive. Today, I pulled them out, dusted the metaphorical dust off them, and decided they weren't all that bad for a first hit out with a new camera and lens. Here are some I'm not too ashamed of:

    A very impressive presentation, Michael.

Image #2, I'm sure I'd rather live beneath the foreground rooftops than the distant ones on the skyline. It looks more homely.

    I agree.
This is the historic Hongkou District, and I'd be pretty sure those buildings are now under preservation order. The domestic architecture of Shanghai's old residential district is a beguiling mix of Chinese and European architectural practices - Victorian terraces crossed with Chinese Hutong. Full off nooks, crannies and charm.

Thanks all for the supportive comments.

As promised (threatened?) here are some more.

These are my very humble efforts in '1933 Shanghai' - an amazing art and retail space repurposed from, of all things, east Asia's (formerly) biggest abattoir. It is a "Escheresque" is the best single-word description I've seen for this architectural gem.

The Slaughterhouse was designed by British architects, though locally financed, and is the last surviving of a trio of structures, one in England and another in the USA (NY?).

The redevelopment has yet to become really successful and was, when I visited, still eerily empty of retailers.

I was playing with the "dramatic tone" filter, which seemed to suit the textures of the place.

For photos of 1933 rather more extensive, representative and talented than mine, see Georg Bodenstein's beautiful photo essay.

I rather think it's a nice set. The 3 in the middle starting with Wusong river are a little bland, but the rest I rather liked. Each had some element of subject.

I also like the architectural lines of 1933 set.

Thanks for the useful critique. I take your point. I especially think the Wusong river is my best effort at postcard photography - not something I aspire to.

Pudong was a failed effort to capture the weirdness of the giant pedestrian roundabout (it was accompanied by lots of failed attempts at capturing the adjacent Apple store, which I won't inflict on you). Maybe I need one of those Samyang fisheyes (if artistic vision fails, buy more gear:rolleyes:).
