One of the best lessons I have learnt coming up from a compact.

I have slowly learnt to look at the information in the viewfinder or LCD screen. Coming from a compact P&S I kept forgetting to look at things like aperture or shutter speed and even white balance, (I have been setting this manually).

It must be one of the things that you do automatically after a while but when starting out in photography proper, it is essential to examine the display.

Those beginning their photography journey today have far more tools available to them. When I began in the mid-60s, film speed, shutter speed, and lens aperture were all we had.

I forget sometimes that I have altered the white balance for indoor lighting, and the aperture for a narrow depth of field, and the shutter speed for dark rooms, and the....... Oh you get what I mean!!!!!

Hi Phil, one thing I'm learning since I've upgraded is to slow down and take everything in.
Oh.... and learning the name of flowers.
