    Hi people
I have the OMD with the two kit zoom lenses and 60mm f/2.8 for portraits and macro. I am going on a cruise to the South Pacific next week and probably going to get the 17mm f/1.8. I'm into candid shots as well as street/urban/cities/architecture and I think this will be a good choice. I'm assuming this lens will be the one that lives on my camera for many situations.
I've browsed through the image thread extensively and I'm pretty impressed!
Can I please have your thoughts on this?

I'm thinking the same thing. but also remember with the 17mm fl, you'll have to get closer to your subjects and the shot may no longer be candid. taking one of your zooms or the 60 for extra reach may be a good idea.

otherwise the distance scale on the 17 is what gets me most excited when it comes to candid street photography.

17 Might be a bit tight if you want to get entire buildings into the shot , but the kit zoom should befine.

I could be a terrible person and hint that the Olympus 12mm and the Panasonic/Leica 25mm would be a better match ;) or I could agree that the 17mm is a good compromise.

The 17mm is perfect. My favorite focal length.

    Thanks all!

Yes, was wondering about the 12mm, I know nothing about it...
I'm thinking 17mm will be a good all-rounder. Hopefully I can try both on the weekend in-store!

    Just 6 more sleeps :)

I agree, trying to fit in whole buildings with the 17mm can be difficult

But otherwise it'd consider it a more versatile all-rounder focal length. More so than the 25mm (IMO).

Don't try the 12mm unless you're prepared to buy it... If you don't like wide angle you might not be tempted by it, but its my favorite m43 lens ever. The 75mm is as nice or nicer but I don't get as much use out of it as the 12...

17 is great for street, very fast focus. 20mm Pany 1.7 is sharper and slower focusing. Might be better for landscape, especially if you are up for some multi frame work and stitching.

So my only concern is that a lot of people say that other lenses are sharper. How "not sharp" is the 17mm? When will I notice it the most?
    Thanks again in advance.

The 17 is very sharp, maybe not razor sharp like the 20 or 75 or 12, but it is a very good lens. You'd only notice it not being sharp if you do nothing but pixel peep.

Robin Wong did a really nice review of the lens here: Robin Wong: Olympus M.Zuiko 17mm F1.8 Review: Street Shooting

Don't let pixel peepers steer you away from a very nice lens.

Wow, what a great review. That really helped a lot. I'm not worried now. I just hope I can get some shots like those on my trip. Thanks for that.

BTW the link has changed I think, I found it here:

The 25 is often too long in a city. I was never a fan of 24 on 35mm, so I don't know about the 12. Things change, however. I shot my recent rip to New Orleans with the 17 2.8, and it was a comfy FL for that city.

So it's been over a month since I got back but I've finally found time to post some pics with this beautiful lens.
I kept the 17mm f1.8 on the body most of the time and switched to my 60mm macro for some shots.
These are all with the 17mm.
    What a trip!
