I live in a small town that is very rarely busy enough for me to feel comfortable committing street photography here. But about a half dozen or so times per year, there is some sort of event in town that brings hordes of people into town, the streets are closed to automobiles, and it becomes a street photography paradise. Yesterday was our annual "restaurant festival" and it was more crowded than I've ever seen it.

This is a relatively upbeat type of street photography - these are happy events, family events, and there's not much, if any, social commentary or documentation of social ills in the shots I do at these events. But I'm always going for human interaction and there's a ton of it to see. I often take a couple of cameras and switch around during the day for a change of pace, but yesterday I just shot with the OMD and 12mm lens all day. All with zone/manual focus, with the flip screen open and serving as a discrete shutter button - in manual focus mode, you just touch the screen ANYWHERE and the camera will fire). Focus at 5 feet, f8, vary the ISO as needed for the light to keep the shutter speed up. Here's a pretty good sampling. You can click through to my Flickr stream if you'd like to see more:

Posts like this need to stop popping up in this forum because it's making me feel the need for the OMD!!!!!!!!

Jokes aside I love the lighting in the 4th photo and the last 3 photos are my favorite. Great set as a whole too!

No need for an OM-D. If you want to emulate Ray's style of shooting for this set (shot from the waist using flip-out screen and touch-screen shutter release) just buy the new E-PL5.

Nice, nice, nice. Like 'em all.

(I need to keep that Restaurant festival in mind for next year. It looks more accessible than Philly's.)

Great stuff as always. You get to be the official mu43 "body cap 15" tester. ;-)

I didn't realize you lived in a small town. I do as well, and it's so hard to shoot in town. I went to Philly a month ago and it was so much fun.

Well, its not super small - about 20,000 when the University is in session. We're the county seat. But the pedestrian life on the street is not generally busy enough to do much street photography. First, there's just not that much to shoot and, when there is, you stand out like a sore thumb even using the most discrete techniques. So, yeah, I take the train into Philly when I really need a "fix", but its great when we have an event like this in town and the place is just flooded with people and I can shoot like I do in New York City...

BTW, where in SW Virginia? I have family in Roanoke and used to in Lynchburg. I've never lived down there, but I've spent a good deal of time there...

Ray, that is a nice set of documentary images of what looks like a fun filled day.

Some nice close up in your face images with that lens.
