What is the deal with having a higher or lower serial number on the OM lenses? just curious...

    I have the option of getting one with a 673XXX s/n or a 544XXX s/n

does it matter?? they both look great btw...

    thanks for the help everyone!

The higher numbers benefit from multicoating. I think they start around 1,000,000 but maybe someone knows for sure. The silver nose early ones definitely weren't MC but I have an early one which is just fine. The coating suppresses flare and improves contrast.
Searches will eventually find all this. mIr website has much info.

You are indicating only six (6) digits in the serial number. According to my records, both are 50 / 1.8 chrome nose, single coated. These would be early versions, buy 'em cheap.

If the serial numbers are seven (7) digits, they would be the black nose version with improved internal workings and multi-coated. HOWEVER ….. there are no seven (7) digit serial numbers beginning with 674XXXX listed in the records.

    Also, it is folk lore that 50 /1.8 lenses starting at 1,000,000 are multi-coated. Multi-coating began at S/N 1,490,000 …. BUT …. S/N 1,493,900 thru 1,643,199 …... and ….. 3,863,400 thru 3,873,199 were SC.
The last production started at S/N 5,897,300 these were MC.
    Hope this helps.
