I purchased my em5 back in 2012. I have never updated the firmware due to the fear or doing something wrong and reuning my camera.
I haven’t done anything with my lenses either.
Am I really missing out on anything?

Thanks in advance for you comments.

What level of firmware is in the camera now & what lenses do you have & what level FW are they?
You are definitely missing out of improvements that have come later than that date, including the small AF target area.
See all updates here. Joint update service for OLYMPUS E-SYSTEM - OLYMPUS Digital Camera
E-M5 FW updates details here. Firmware Update for OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Just do it, but follow the instructions fully. Firmware Update Instructions
Make sure the battery is fully charged & SD card removed & to get the latest updater you can update the Olympus Viewer 3 program & it gets it all. Don't try to update with an older Updater program, but this is where you can get just the latest Updater. Software Download | OLYMPUS Digital Camera Updater | Olympus Corporation

The firmware for the camera is whatever came with the camera back in 2012.
My lenses are the 12-50, 17, 45, and the 40-150. All were purchased years ago.

Then it's time to get out that cable, charge the battery & download the Camera Updater or Olympus Viewer 3 with all updates then & update the camera & lenses.
The camera will have to be updated in two stages though as there was one that had to be rolled back & so now the process of updating is as follows.

Firmware Update for OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
    [ E-M5 ]
For updating the camera to the latest version, you are required to update the camera twice.

If the current version is 1.0 or 1.1:
First, update the camera to version 1.3, and then update to the latest version.

If the current version is 1.2:
First, update the camera to version 1.4, and then update to the latest version.
