Olympus goes cool

Discussion in 'Open Discussion' started by Luckypenguin, Sep 6, 2011.

  1. In a cool part of town there's a cool side-street with a cool cafe and a cool advertising wall usually spruiking all of the coolest bands and music festivals. When I went past on the weekend there was a new addition.

There's a full page ad in this months Capture (an Australian "pro" photography magazine) as well. It's right in the middle of an article about pros moving to small we sired digital cameras as alternatives to big DSLRs. Look like we're ahead of the curve. We've already worked that out. There must be a big push on by Olympus.

  4. I loved their tagline:

"The PEN looks like it came from your Dad"

Time was when that wouldn't have been considered cool

    Very interesting...

(I swear I've seen the light-painting pic on the Chilli Peppers poster before...)

I also love their tagline. I think whether it is cool or not depends on the decade your Dad is from. When I was growing up, I always thought my Dad's old stuff was cool. But his old stuff was from the 50s and 60s.... a great era for design.

Unfortunately, he was never into photography:(

    Hi Nic,

Very cool post, and great get.

Tell me though, is this word "spruiking" part of the local lingo?

Ah, never mind I looked it up, it is an "Aussie" thing, even in origin.

    spruik (ˈspruːɪk)

    — vb

archaic , slang ( Austral ) ( intr ) to speak in public (used esp of a showman or salesman)

    [C20: of unknown origin]

    'spruiker

  8. Most of my memories of my Dad are from the 80s

He was into photography though, with a Canon FTb that I still have. I think he would have got a kick out of the modern Pens.

P.S. Sorry Alan, I didn't realise I was speaking Orstralyan.

OMG, they're right. My PEN does look like it came from my dad. Especially with the legacy lenses I put on the poor thing. Does anybody want to buy this old fuddy-duddy junk of mine? I'm upgrading to a Sony NEX right now!! Something that looks cool, like it came from the future. ;)

Or do you think maybe the Panasonic GF-3 looks futuristic enough? Then I can maybe stick with Micro Four-Thirds lenses... I'm still not willing to give up decent glass in the pursuit of coolness. xD

    Cool find on the poster.

Yeah, I nearly spat out that shot of tequila when I saw that Hall & Oats are still touring.

My Dad was a fuddy-duddy then, now he's just an older fuddy-duddy .... mellowed out a bit, but still old. In another twenty years or so, I may look just like him, but I refuse to get old.
